Depending on bedrock, climate and other conditions extending the grid can cost $15,000 to $50,000 per mile! An off-grid system allows for comfortable living or for powering well pumps for livestock in remote locations beyond the grid.
Solar PV or hybrid renewable power systems provide clean, quiet, reliable electricity to remote and pristine locations without the expense or environmental damage of expanding the utility grid. Adding batteries to your solar photovoltaic, hydro or wind electric power system will allow you to store power and use it during hours when power can't be produced. Battery-based systems serve on-grid and off-grid locations. They are optional for grid-tied systems but essential for off-grid systems.
A simple battery based system, like a solar-powered or wind-powered DC pump for delivering well water to livestock or powering DC appliances will consist of an array or turbine, a charge controller, and enough batteries to store power for sunless periods.
To store power for use with AC appliances, like typical household appliances, an inverter will be needed as well.
